Empowering User Privacy: A Look at OpenAI's New Feature to Disable Chat History in ChatGPT
OpenAI prioritizes privacy, adding a feature for greater data transparency and control, setting an AI industry standard. For users? Better experiences and assured data confidentiality.
In an era where data privacy is of paramount importance, OpenAI has made a significant stride in ensuring user confidentiality with a new feature for ChatGPT, the AI chatbot known for its impressive language capabilities. This fresh update allows users to disable chat history, addressing concerns surrounding the AI’s use of personal conversations for its improvement.
In a blog post shared recently, OpenAI revealed the introduction of this privacy control, which effectively means that when chat history is switched off, the conversation wouldn’t be leveraged to enhance the AI's capabilities nor would it appear in the history sidebar. Quite a giant leap towards assuring user privacy!
The feature rollout is ongoing and users can access this function through the settings tab located next to the user account in the three-dot menu. Look out for an option labeled “Data controls” where you can toggle off the “chat history & training storage” mode. A much welcome simplification compared to the erstwhile procedure where users had to opt out of data collection via a Google doc form.
While this privacy control has been hailed, there's a small caveat that users must be aware of. Even with chat history disabled, OpenAI will still hold onto your conversations, albeit temporarily. The data will be retained for a period of 30 days, solely for monitoring potential abuse, before it's wiped out permanently.
The introduction of this privacy control follows closely on the heels of an incident where a bug in ChatGPT caused leakage of random users' conversation histories. Additionally, it addresses concerns about the potential misuse of proprietary data fed into ChatGPT for training the AI model.
In fact, a fiction writer had a firsthand experience of this potential issue when she noticed how ChatGPT could inadvertently promote plagiarism by regurgitating content input from different authors. As she succinctly put it, “if you give it your intellectual property, it could then spit it out to someone else.”
However, OpenAI isn't resting on its laurels. It's actively developing a “new ChatGPT Business subscription” designed specifically for users and businesses with heightened sensitivity to data collection. This variant of ChatGPT will abide by the company's API data usage policies, ensuring that end-user data won't be utilized to train AI models by default. Pricing details are under wraps at the moment, but we can expect to see the launch in the coming months.
Another handy addition to ChatGPT's functionality is the ability to export your entire conversation history data. This tool, accessible through the settings panel, will compile all past dialogues with the AI into a file, which will be dispatched to your registered email address.
With these updates, OpenAI is clearly demonstrating its commitment to fostering user trust while innovating in the world of artificial intelligence. The introduction of these new features is another step forward in balancing the benefits of AI technology with the essential privacy rights of users.
